The Department of Malaysian Languages and Applied Linguistics was set up in 1998 with the first intake of undergraduate students. The Department conducts programmes in Chinese and Tamil languages and offers courses in Malay language, Iban language, Chinese language and translation studies as electives at undergraduate level. The staff members in the Department also conduct Malay language courses to international students at the undergraduate and post graduate levels. At present, the Department has 18 staff members who engage in teaching and research in the languages taught in the Department and translation studies, sign language and endangered languages.
The Department organises seminars and conferences from time to time. To date, the Department has organised three international conference in Chinese Language and Linguistics and one international conference in Tamil Language and Linguistics. Seminars in Chinese and Tamil Language and translation are open to both teaching staff and students. The Department has published three books in Chinese Language and Linguistics, one book in Tamil Language and Linguistics and one book in translation study.
The Department provides students with an education which emphasizes creativity and life-long learning. As a result, they can easily adapt to a wide range of professions. Graduates of the Department majoring in either Chinese or Tamil Language, will be equipped with a high degree of proficiency in these languages, and excellent interpersonal communication skills. Our graduates of the Department work in both the public and private sectors, especially in the fields of education, mass media, commerce and other institutions.
